Urgent Concern: Injustice in Kiera’s Case and the Removal of Baby Zammi
Dear Sor / Madam,
I am writing to you as a concerned member of the public regarding the heartbreaking case of Kiera,
an Inuit mother who was separated from her newborn baby, Zammi, due to the use of the now-
discontinued FKU test in Denmark.
As you may be aware, this test has been deemed unfit for purpose and has been discontinued for
good reason. It is deeply troubling that Kiera, who comes from a culturally and linguistically distinct
background, was disproportionately affected by this flawed method. Experts have acknowledged
that the test was not designed with Indigenous, non-Danish speakers in mind, and as such, its
application to Kiera was both inappropriate and discriminatory.
Kiera has recently lost her court case to regain custody of Zammi, despite the growing public and
professional consensus that the original removal was unjust. This outcome has caused immense
pain, not just to Kiera but to all who value fairness and cultural understanding in child welfare
decisions.
I urge you to re-examine Kiera’s case with the urgency and compassion it deserves. We must
ensure that no parent is ever again subjected to such a flawed and biased process. Denmark has a
responsibility to uphold the rights of Indigenous mothers and children, and to correct the harms
caused by systemic failures.
Please act now to reunite Kiera and Zammi.
Sincerely,
Francesca Massey
