GRU Urgent Appeal for Justice: Reunite Keira and Her Daughter Zammi
Dear Members of the Greenland Committee (GRU),
I am writing to you as a concerned parent and fellow human being, deeply moved and troubled by
the case of Keira, an Inuit mother from Greenland, who has lost custody of her daughter Zammi
following what appears to be a deeply flawed parental competency assessment (FKU).
From what has been reported, this test does not sufficiently account for cultural differences in
parenting styles and values—particularly those of Indigenous communities such as the Inuit. The
result is not just a bureaucratic failure, but a human tragedy. A mother has been separated from
her child. A baby has lost the fundamental connection with her parent. And an entire community
feels the weight of historic injustice repeating itself.
As a mother myself, I cannot begin to imagine the trauma this separation has already caused—nor
the lasting damage it may inflict if not urgently remedied.
I urge you to review this case with compassion, and to consider the broader context of colonial and
systemic discrimination that may be at play. It is crucial that parenting assessments are culturally
sensitive and conducted with humility, fairness, and respect for diverse family traditions.
Please do everything in your power to ensure that Keira’s appeal is heard with fresh eyes and that
mother and daughter have the opportunity to be reunited. Justice and humanity must guide us
above all.
Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
Simone Pierk
