The NATO Secretary General’s Annual ReportFriday, 22 March 2013, 12.30-14.30Danish Institute for International StudiesMain AuditoriumStrandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen KBackgroundOn 31 January, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen presented his Annual Report, whichprovides an overview of the past year’s achievements and of future challenges facing the Alliance. Thereport covers a wide range of topics, from NATO’s all-important involvement in Afghanistan to its rolein Kosovo, to counter-piracy. Looking ahead, NATO has taken steps towards investing in capabilitiesthat the Alliance will need in order to move forward over the next decade. The overall framework iscalled ‘NATO Forces 2020’ and will allow the Alliance to have a coherent set of forces to be able to meetthe targets of the 21st century. The Alliance’s economic recovery and its security cannot be addressedseparately. As the Secretary General states in his introduction, “The security challenges of the 21stcentury the security challenges of the 21st century—terrorism, proliferation, piracy, cyber warfare,unstable states—will not go away as we focus on fixing our economies”. Part of this core challenge isalso the uneven defense spending, not just between the US and Europe and within Europe. In an age ofgrowing interdependence, cooperation with countries and organizations worldwide is of paramountimportance.
