To the Chair of the European Union                                                    Copenhagen the 7th October 2008                                 Â
Mr. le President Nicolas Sarkozy and
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bernard Kouchner
Messieurs,
We would like to draw your attention to the resolution passed on Palestinian prisoners by the European Parliament in September 2008.
This resolution highlights the Israeli violations of international law, and calls on Israel to respect the rights of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
The resolution was the outcome of the oral question addressed to the EU Commission and Council when the debate opened at the EP plenary in July, and represents an important step in the struggle for human rights and legality.
Â
Calling for the respect of humane treatment of all prisoners - about 11,000 and among them approximately 385 children - the EP asks Israel “to guarantee that minimum standards for detention be respected, to bring to trial all detainees, to put an end to the use of 'administrative detention orders', and to implement adequate measures for minors and prisoners' visiting rightsâ€. It also urges a substantial release of deÂtainees as well as the immediate release of the 48 imprisoned members of the Palestinian Legislative Council, including Marwan Barghouti.
We, the HRM, Women in Dialogue, Denmark – Israel - Palestine, wish to express our support for the EP resolution and look forward to the resolution’s request becoming an active part of your efforts and those of the French Chairmanship.
Attached please find the appeal signed by 315 persons who participated in the European Social Forum in Malmø in September 2008.
Looking forward to your kind reply,
f. Human Rights March
