To all members and associate
members of the Sub-Committee
on Transatlantic Defence and
Security Co-operation
18 October, 2005
Dear member,
On behalf of the Chair of the Subcommittee on Transatlantic Defence and Security
Cooperation, Sven Mikser, I am writing to ask for your suggestions for the future
program of the Subcommittee.
In general, the Rapporteur of the Subcommittee (John Shimkus) decides on the topic of
the report and the visits of the Subcommittee are often chosen to support the report
with first-hand research. However, this does not prevent the Subcommittee from
visiting countries that are of particular interest, even if they are not directly related to
the report topic. This summer, for example, the Subcommittee had a very interesting
visit to Sweden that did not feature in the Subcommittee report on the Prague
Capability Commitments. But the members learned a considerable amount about how
a non-NATO European country was working with NATO in international operations and
the particular challenges Sweden faces in restructuring its military to better cope with
current demands.
If you have specific ideas, I would appreciate a brief note via email or fax stating the
country you believe the Subcommittee should visit and the issues that should be
explored there in relation to the overall theme of transatlantic defence and security
cooperation. I will compile your suggestions and give them to the Chair and
Rapporteur to take under consideration. We hope that this process will allow us to
shape the Subcommittee program for 2006 and 2007 in a manner that reflects a broad
consensus of the members.
I would like to ask for your submissions as soon as possible, preferably no later than
Friday, 21 October. Please contact me if you have any questions at zselden@nato-
pa.int or (+32-2-513-2865).
Regards,
Zachary Selden
