PANEL I: Human trafficking and the Internet: how the Internet is changing patterns
How does the increasing importance of the internet change human trafficking? In this panel session
participants will explore how traffickers of human beings use the internet, information technology, social
media and mobile messaging to meet and recruit victims, as well as to advertise and contact customers. What
is the significance of the more difficult areas of the internet, such as the so-called deep web? The session will
also address the link between human trafficking and other forms of criminal behaviour, such as grooming and
child pornography.

PANEL II: Cyberspace for protection
and prevention
In this panel, participants will focus on
the opportunities, rather than the
dangers, which the internet and other
digital networks provide in addressing
the problem of human trafficking. In
particular, participants will discuss the
use of digital means for the purpose of
preventing
human trafficking, as well
for
protecting
the victims of human
trafficking. Because of the importance
of the internet and social media in
everyday life, a new approach to
preventing human trafficking and
protecting victims is needed,
embracing modern technologies and
taking advantage of their possibilities,
as well creating
partnerships
with
other actors and institutions.

PANEL III: Tracking digital
footsteps. The internet as a tool for
investigation.
The targeting and recruitment of
victims and their exploitation via
online channels requires a
comprehensive strategy for law
enforcement and
prosecution
to track
and investigate such online activities.
The prosecution of the perpetrators of
human trafficking is, by nature, a
responsive rather than proactive
approach. How to ensure that
investigation and prosecution
strategies keep in pace with
technological developments and
changing
modi operandi?
For sure,
governments will need the support of
other actors and institutions in their
efforts, which makes creating effective
partnerships
essential. In this panel
session, participants will address a
range of issues relating to the
prosecution of human trafficking
activities including online
investigations, digital forensics, digital
footsteps, as well as the investigation
of online money flows. Which
innovative methods are currently
being used and developed? And what
legal, ethical, and practical dilemmas
do law enforcement agencies and
prosecution services encounter when
using such methods?
